AP is reporting that bring the troops home from Iraq is 3 months behind schedule, and that 30-50k troops will remain to continue training Iraqis. "The United States plans to withdraw most of its troops from Iraq by August 2010, 19 months after President Barack Obama's inauguration, according to administration officials. The withdrawal plan would fulfill one of Obama's central campaign pledges, albeit a little more slowly than he promised. He said he would withdraw troops within 16 months, roughly one brigade a month from the time of his inauguration. "The officials said they expect Obama to make the announcement this week. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the plan has not been made public. I can't endorse or oppose the question as propositioned. I certainly don't want an "irresponsible" withdrawal. The war is righteous. I want troops withdrawals as soon as possible but not on any published timetable. I expect the DOE to make these decisions approved by the President but I don't want or expect to know of any timetable.

He's going to go along with whatever the commanders tell him to, because he doesn't want to risk turning what's ended up being a successful war (after a very rocky start) into a civil war. He's too proud to let Iraq deteriorate, so looks like the anit-war crowd got sold a bill of goods!

I'm certainly skeptical, but I think the jury is still out on this one. Obama's gonna be running the military, he has to say he will do what his commanders tell him to. It would be exceedingly stupid to suggest otherwise. That doesn't mean at all that Gates under Obama will be the same as Gates under Bush.

I have family in the military and I have talked to many people who are in the war about what their feelings are towards pulling troops, and NOT one of them said we should bring the troops home...and, I watch on tv the brave men fighting over their getting interviewed and they say we need to stay. I firmly believe that they have a better idea about what is going on and what we need to do, so I tend to trust the ones smack dab in the middle of this and the people in charge. It is their job and they made this decision for a reason. I love how we all sit at home and let the media dictate how we feel about something that we really don't know much about - except for what the media glorifies to us. Do the Americans in favor of bringing the troops home realize that we have soldiers ALL over the world still.....we are in Africa helping fight the genocide that is happening over there, we are in Japan, we are in Korean, we are in Vietnam (still), we are in many places....and no one says anything about those guys coming home now....my tax dollars goes to help pay those men to protect our country and we also have a moral obligation to help other countries who need it as well. By people saying "f" that country, I don't like them anyway, only gives others the impression that we are the cold-hearted selfish people that the world thinks we are to begin with. I would hope that Americans would be a little kinder and want to help in any way that we can....and please, once we made the agreement to help, we should really keep our word and not just turn our backs the minute a few people get upset because a few men have been killed in this process...remember how long it took for just a few planes to kill MANY Americans on their own soil. And I have heard from people that if I had someone over their I would feel differently, but the fact is, is that my brother is smack dab in the middle of Kabul Afghanistan teaching their military and police officers how to fight...he is in the Navy and WANTED to volunteer to help out over there.
