BUILD A 21st CENTURY NETWORK: Invest in a world-leading, sustainable transportation system. As oil grows costlier, the aviation system teeters and metro areas grow ever more central to our economy, we must rapidly catch up to other developed countries with high- speed rail, world-class public transportation and facilities for cyclists and pedestrians. We must fix bottlenecks in our freight corridors. Our cities and towns must have safe streets for walking and biking to reach transit, school and jobs. Public planning and implementation of rail transit, especially, can unleash billions in private investment, which can be applied to its construction and operation. Expanding highways must no longer claim the lion’s share of national investment.
Stop building new roads and complete the system with better infrastructure for all citizens.

It’s the federal government that establishes our transportation priorities and provides most of the funding to the states, who in turn provide transportation funds to local governments. Reducing traffic congestion, air pollution, our dependence on foreign oil improving the health of our sedentary population and mitigating climate change are national priorities.

I love this idea, but I think this is something that needs to be done at the municipal level. It’s not really a national priority. I encourage all of you to get involved in your municipal governments and argue for these kinds of improvements.

As fossil fuels dry up, pedal power remains the only viable alternative to walking 1-20 miles distances. Lets get non-essential cars out of our cities and return to a regional, sustainable lifestyle!

We desperately need a major paradigm shift in transportation: which means a major paradigm shift in transportation modes! We need a balanced, sustainable, multimodal/intermodal system of transportation — one that shifts us from over-reliance on the automobile to the most economical, energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly modes of transportation: bicycling, walking, and mass transit (rail and bus). The American people want and deserve a first-rate, world-class, multimodal/intermodal system that will serve the need of all of our citizens — young and old alike — for low-cost, energy-efficient, carbon-minimizing, pollution-free, health-promoting, safe, comfortable, and convenient transportation. -CompleteStreets

Our children need safe ways to get themselves to and from their schools. Once there, if we would teach them the ‘rules of the road’ by bicycle before borrowing the car, the rest of our surface roads become useful for cyclists, and eventually all drivers would respect bikes, for having used them to learn how to drive. Teach ‘bicycle driving’, and all out roads become ‘bicycle friendly’ for adults. Our major bridges, though, should be upgraded to have bicycle/pedestrian access to reduce our automotive centrism.

absolutely. Not only would bikeways cut down on fossil fuel use, but it would make for healthier citizens, cutting down on health care costs. I’m all for single payer health care, but with the overweight out-of-shape bodies in this country, it will cost more than other countries. Plus, all the health care costs associated with car crashes and car vs pedestrians. ie, paramedics to pick up car victims, ER costs of treating, head injury and spine injuries that need lifetime care, etc.
We also need to stop corn subsidies and factory farming, to better our health and to stop animal cruelty.

White House 2 is a multi-partisan network of 10561 citizens imagining how the White House might work if it was run completely democratically by thousands of people over the internet. It's free and all U.S. citizens can join.

We're setting priorities, collaborating on policy, and creating a massive database of 2868 talking points covering all sides of every important issue facing our country. Watch the video intro.

Getting involved is easy and fun. Just join and start setting your priorities, like a todo list. The more people who endorse a priority, the higher it rises in the charts. The more people who join the network, the more clout we will have with the President and the media.
